DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT: Die nackten, fleischlosen Knochen einer bösen Existenz

Wenn DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT feiern, dann richtig.

Was steckt noch hinter DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT?

Never change a winning team?

 DRAGGED

English version

With Widowmaker you concentrate on the Sludge and Doom Metal-side of the band. Did you aim for a more hermetic release on which Black and Death Metal-material wouldn´t have fit?

Widowmaker was always there in the back of our collective conscious. There is never an agenda as such, but a definite desire to manifest that which most people hide. Widowmaker is an accurate portrayal of this.

Will you leave the Black and Death Metal-scene, or might these Elements come back in the future?

DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is not scripted like many other extreme metal acts nowadays. We move to no ones whims but our own and never demand people witness our outpourings. They are present of their own volition and it is a unspoken feeling of unease with the listener with which we are both able to relate. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is extreme in every form and there is no set genre in which we choose to work, we do what we do and like what we do, without limitation.

Widowmaker starts with calm, yet totally miserable 15 minutes of slightly distorted guitars and a very depressing violin. Do you stretch this out for so long to keep the contrast to part II as extreme as possible?

For every part of Widowmaker, every last note and cymbal hit was considered for its fullest potential before we committed to a final form as such. The length of a track is always an irrelevance in our eyes, it is what it is. People will either listen or they won´t, and those listening will always make their own observations. A very unique few will as always have the patience to listen and perhaps understand the feeling conveyed.

The violin plays a bigger part in the music – it can be heard in the background in the brutal moments, it plays the melody in the intro. Was it there from the beginning, or did you add it towards the end, to get another musical dimension?

It was always a part of Widowmaker and a long considered concept. As with any DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT recording there is a blank canvas and from the initial idea grows a hideous ugliness. The violin does as intended, it is not more or less than had been expected.

Do you see Widowmaker as one song, divided into two or three parts? If so, how did you write this piece – did you put it together piece by piece, and how long did it take? Was it an intense writing experience?

Widowmaker is to be swallowed whole. There is very little room for compromise. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT are geographically situated approximately 300 miles from each other involved and this means that whenever the collective congregates, those involved are at breaking point from day one with bad things to come. It seems to be an unspoken signal, a purging is imminent and that drives the creative process, a complete exorcism of sound. It is never easy though, but amidst the chaos something dark and fucking ugly cultivates, eventually making its presence.
Widowmaker is very much a journey through our various misdemeanors and unspoken vengeful deeds. It is a completely selfish recording and a concurrent deformed twin to Hatred for Mankind. Another head to DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT´s hydra and plethora of sound.

While one could think, DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT play raw music, Widowmaker grows with each playthrough, and offers between the monolithic riffs some really nice, dissonances, sick twists and so on. Was it important to you to add a more complex side to the music and hide it under a raw surface?

There is no methodology. There is simply a huge void to be filled. The music literally writes itself, many would say that it comes from the depths within and Widowmaker is very much a beast of its own making. Ideologies are conceived, nurtured and explored out until such a time that every available inch is filled and the end result is a saturated behemoth which reflects a collective mindset in the clearest light. Pure and scathing.

What was the main musical inspiration for Widowmaker? BURNING WITCH? Early SWANS and NEUROSIS? What else, or none of these Bands?

 DRAGGED
The music literally writes itself, many would say that it comes from the depths within and Widowmaker is very much a beast of its own making.

Although there are elements of bands we enjoy within our music, our inspiration derives directly from the day to day insanity. The music is an interpretation of music layered on top of a dark reality. There are certainly influences of the slower and louder bands that we grew up listening to such as EYEHATEGOD, MUGWART, BURNING WITCH, NEUROSIS, RAMESSES, UNEARTHLY TRANCE, GRIEF, ISIS, OM and some of the sludgier death metal approaches like INCANTATION and OBITUARY.

What is the motivation to run this band? Playing music in this way, with this intensity, has to be about more than hatred and misanthropy. What else is behind DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT?

This band began out of our mutual frustration and the utmost disappointment that we encountered over the years, trial after trial. For those involved, this is the last chance to make amends and put to rest a number of demons, it is the end of the road and it is something that absolutely has to be done. There is zero compromise and that is a fact we are agreed upon. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is a devotion and anything less than 300% is unacceptable. It is driven by pure hatred and that is an underlying motivation, it is such a raw momentum that it propels itself and snowballs around this huge void of sound that swells with each exploration, and a needle that draws blood from the blackened heart of the underground.

Listening to the album evokes in me the same feeling I had when I watched the French film Martyrs. It certainly feels like a borderline experience – suffering to get salvation. Can you relate to this comparison?

This is something that can be understood except there is no salvation. Only an exorcism of the venoms that build up from daily human interaction, and subsequently, infection, an infection which sifts and boils. In short, depression feeds on depression, and violence feeds on violence. Depictions of both run viral through the arteries of DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT.

Speaking of films: DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT sound like a band that could find inspiration in heavy visual material. True? If so, what helped you to create Widowmaker?

There is a 40 minute video – as yet unreleased – directed and produced by Dwid Hellion (INTEGRITY). There is music, there is a vision, and there is a projection of that vision. We hope there will come a form to Widowmaker however this is something that continues to evolve, and only time will tell what is to come. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT feeds on a plethora of influence, however, visuals and artwork also contribute towards great releases, for example, the artwork of Ed Repka on early NUCLEAR ASSAULT records, which would not be as great as they in fact are without the vision. The art is as much a part of the record as the music itself. The artwork to a record can often comprise the stills to the madness.

The sound is amazing, it´s so raw and dirty, yet heavy at the same time. You worked again with Tom Dring and Billy Anderson. Never change a winning team?

Billy Anderson´s master of Widowmaker is yet to come. The first press is mastered by Tom Dring solely, and whereas on Hatred For Mankind the two worked very cohesively, it remains to be seen whether both have a different take on Widowmaker. They have both dwelled separately in the creative vacuum at various times throughout the recording process and the end result, which will be a unique concoction, is yet to be heard or seen. It will no doubt become apparent.

The album sounds rather spontaneous, and to stay ugly and heavy and to not overproudce it, I suppose you recorded no longer than a few days maybe, didn´t you?

When distance is such an issue, it tends to make these moments more intense and the creative process more gratifying. Widowmaker was recorded various times throughout the past years and comprises many different arrangements, feelings and situations. It is impossible to put a timescale to the recording process. Much like Hatred For Mankind, the process was drowned in chemicals and total chaos unfolded each time. There are times of sleeping and waking up within the same recording session as they seemed to mold into one.

The artwork this time is more abstract than on Hatred For Mankind, yet it is filled with perverse pictures, disturbing symbols and complex visual composition. The closer you look, the less you see -you have to look at it from the distance, to see the whole of it. Was this your idea behind the cover?

 DRAGGED
Disturbing: The artwork of Widowmaker.

It is not possible to say that we worked with Sindre Foss on the artwork for Widowmaker, but on some telepathic level it is possible that we did. Much like the artistic draw for Hatred For Mankind, Sindre like Justin is a truly unique individual and one of few like-minded individuals who is able to take the feeling created and propelled by DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT onto a canvas and furthermore, illustrate such monstrosity. We spoke several times over the course of years and each time the connection grew until such as a time that Sindre felt mentally at one with the music. Sindre contacted us one day out of the blue to say that he had decided to go to a cabin in the woods and stay for a month, and that is where Widowmaker as you see it was crafted. In the darkest depths of loneliness, there is something very special about the artwork which is so unique to the interpretation of one individual, but equally the same can be said by the common chord Sindre´s interpretation strikes with other like-minded individuals, ourselves included. It is our honour to have worked with such a great mind and satisfying to see such an accurate portrayal of something totally unspoken but hideous exposed.

While the outside is painted with ink, the booklet is also coloured – it looks chaotic with a few morbid centrepieces, and it all deals with death while the rest looks like a ritual. So is the whole artwork 50% satanic rites and 50% funeral rites? Am I on the right track? This time, no lyrics are revealed. Does the visual concept tell the story instead?

Much like art, Widowmaker holds a concept in its influence. It is for the observer to draw an interpretation. Similarly to what we have done with those bands that we have grown up listening to. A concept does not require a narrative, because that is a story. Widowmaker is not a story, it is a reality.

Psychologists would love to treat the individuals behind the music. Is it just a provoking, shocking imagery you use, or do you show us something of your true self? Worshipping Satan, drug abuse, is this your way of life?

DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is the most accurate portrayal of a collective mindset. If you were to dissect the motivations however, the collective is likely to be akin to the individual. None of those involved subscribe to religious or political beliefs. Drug exploration is a common theme throughout DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT, it is somewhat of a chemical imbalance and those who opt to indulge, often indulge heavily because this is the chosen path, whereas others are not. Some are parents, some are in high powered positions, and all are accomplished. There is no financial motivation for what is essentially a final venture, and what you see is what you get. Nothing but the bare unfleshed bones of a sincerely evil presence.
For us all, the opportunity to purge our daily grind and perform with bands we admire is our biggest motivation.

You prefer to stay anonymous. Do you fear consequences with your employers, your families and so on? Does the anonymity help to realise your vision without any compromise?

There are obviously personal lives outside of DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT, however the main motivation for anonymity is that the two are polar opposite, DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is the dark shadow, a spewing exorcism of the demons that dwell within. Anonymity does assist in realising a vision without compromise as there is nothing else to hold, it is a rotting carcass served cold with a swarm of flies feasting on the dried blood. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT is a shroud that people can relate to. It is also noted that contemporary extreme metal is diluted and often lacks the substance and integrity of the early 90s extreme metal scene that we were a part of.

DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT isn´t known for extensive touring – I believe you played one EU-tour and one US- tour. Will you change this? There´s a German Doom-band whose vocalist told me that they´d never play a one-week-tour again, as his hate starts to fade during that period. Can you realte to this? Do you need hate to perform?

We played two European tours, one with WEEDEATER/ BLACK COBRA and another with RWAKE, and the US tour earlier this year. The desire to perform live in each of those involved is not guided by hate but by the need to release. This growing frustration and hatred which is always bursting at the seams is never ending, regardless of days. We could no doubt continue indefinitely. The prohibition is that DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT should be a concentrated effort and there is every chance that breaking ourselves in the way that we do on tour would not be constructive mentally and would inevitably lead to collapse. DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT should be, as it is, savoured as ´it´ will not last forever. Hatred is sewn into the souls of those involved and it is nuclear.
