Lange war es ruhig um PORCUPINE TREE, das letzte Album “The Incident” erschien 2009. Nun hat die Progressive Rock-Band nach den Songs „Of The New Day“ und “Harridan” sowie “Herd Culling” mit “Rats Return” einen weiterenen Song vom neuen, elften Album “Closure/Continuation” veröffentlicht.
“Closure/Continuation” erscheint am 24. Juni 2022 via Music For Nations/Sony sowohl in einer sieben Tracks umfassenden Standard Edition als auch in einer Deluxe-Version mit zehn Tracks.
PORCUPINE TREE-Sänger Steven Wilson sagt über den Song: „Rats Return is about those who claim to have the interests of the people at heart, but when it comes down to it there is only ego and self-interest. I find myself reflecting on what sort of person would actually be so driven as to want to rule over a whole nation, and aren’t these people by definition the very last people that should be allowed to do so? The rats will always save themselves first.“

Über „Of The New Day“ sagt Steven Wilson: „‚Of The New Day‘ ist ein Song über Wiedergeburt aus der Dunkelheit. Er klingt trügerisch simpel, eine erkennbar untypische Porcupine Tree-Ballade. Jedenfalls bis man merkt, dass die Taktlängen dauernd variieren; normale 4/4-Zählzeit mündet in 3/4, dann in 5/4, in 6/4, in 11/4, sodass der Track nie in einer Taktart verharrt. Das können Porcupine Tree manchmal sehr gut: Eine fast schon intellektuelle oder mathematische Grundidee total natürlich und eingängig klingen zu lassen. Zumindest hoffe ich, dass sich nicht das Gefühl einstellt, wir wollten nur für den Selbstzweck clever sein oder Technik über Musikalität stellen. Außer natürlich man möchte sich genau auf diesen Aspekt der Komposition konzentrieren.“
