AMENRA suchen das Licht und die Sonne, auch auf Mass V, dem ersten Studioalbum seit viereinhalb Jahren. Momentan befindet sich die belgische Band aber noch in der tiefsten Finsternis, ist stets auf der Suche. Immerhin erleben wir unglaublich intensive Momente mit Mass V, das unwahrscheinlich schmerzlich, aber auch reinigend ist. Mit einem kleinen Fragenkatalog werden wir bei Sänger Colin H van Eeckhout vorstellig, der in Rekordzeit antwortet und sich entschuldigt, dass seine Antworten recht knapp ausfallen. Aber keine Sorge, alles Wichtige ist gesagt.
Hallo Colin, Gratulation zu Mass V, das mich noch immer überwältigt. War das Schreiben des Albums ebenso schmerzhaft, wie man es erwarten könnte? Ist AMENRA mehr ein Medium zur Reinigung, als nur eine Band?
Mass V war für uns extrem schwierig zu schreiben. Das Schwerste, das wir jemals gemacht haben. Eine Art Evolution von der Finsternis zum Licht.
Es ist jederzeit deutlich, dass AMENRA spielen, und doch gibt es ein paar Änderungen in der Musik. Mass V klingt mehr nach Doom und Sludge, außerdem sind A Mon Ame und Boden über weite Strecken sehr ruhig, fast ebenbürtig mit den brachialen Stellen, was die Dynamik irre effektiv werden lässt. Ihr habt viel an den Kontrasten gearbeitet, nehme ich an?
Wir haben an gar nichts gearbeitet Wir haben nur geschrieben. Und beendeten das mit dem, was nun Mass V genannt wird.
Nowena | 9.10 ist die ultimative Waffe. Der Schlussteil ist mörderisch. Gibt es einen Grund, warum dies der letzte Track ist? Für mich fühlt es sich an, als müsste da noch etwas kommen, es ist zu brutal die Hörer nach diesem Song alleine stehen zu lassen.
Das ist beabsichtigt. Wir beendeten das Album mit einem Fade-Out, weil wir glauben, dass da noch etwas kommen wird.
Die Songs sind trotz ihrer Länge sehr simpel, haben jeweils nur ein paar Teile, werden aber recht lange gespielt. Es ist somit wichtig, Riffs zu haben, die auch nach vielen Wiederholungen noch funktionieren. Ich nehme somit an, ihr habt viele Riffs im Songwriting-Prozess weggeworfen?
Wir werfen mehr weg, als wir behalten. Jedes Riff, das Sinn macht, das unser Dasein perfekt überträgt wird behalten, der Rest verschwindet.
Mass V wurde mehr als vier Jahre nach Mass IIII veröffentlicht. In dieser Zeit habt ihr euch mehr auf Splitbeiträge mit experimentellen Tracks konzentriert. Das erscheint so, das wärt ihr die ganze Zeit hindurch aktiv gewesen, könntet aber nicht mit einem kompletten Album weiter machen?
Wir hatten nichts geschrieben, von dem wir dachten, es wäre wert auf einem AMENRA-Album zu stehen: Wir schrieben viel und warfen es wieder weg.

Ich nehme an, dass eine Band mit einem Intensitätslevel wie AMENRA nicht einfach nach einer Tour oder einem Album wieder anfangen kann Musik zu schreiben. Ich denke, da muss ein bestimmtes Gefühl herrschen, um weiter machen zu können. Stimmt das? Was muss passieren, damit ihr wieder kreativ sein könnt?
Schlimme Dinge müssen passieren. Wir müssen einen Grund haben.
Ihr habt zwei neue Bandmitglieder. Was waren Lennarts und Levys Aufgaben im Songwriting? Bringen sie neue Ideen ins Bandgefüge?
Das tun wir alle. Lennart auch, Levy noch nicht so sehr, er stieß recht spät im Songwriting-Prozess zu uns. Ich glaube wirklich daran, dass Mass VI die ultimative Kombination von uns allen und unserer individuellen Vision von Musik sein wird.
Mass V hat den besten Gesamteindruck von allen AMENRA-Alben. Es gibt vier Kapitel, jedes klingt unterschiedlich, aber man kann das gemeinsame Feeling erkennen, vielleicht wie die Stufen einer Evolution. Oder ist das nur Zufall?
Alles kommt aus denselben Herzen. Von denselben Wesen. Es gibt immer eine Beziehung zu den Dingen, die wir tun. Das ist eine Art Wahrheit.
Ihr habt mit Produzentenlegende Billy Anderson zusammen gearbeitet, und das Resultat ist der brutalste und beste Sound, den ihr bisher hattet. Das klingt nach einer guten Zusammenarbeit. Hatte Billy auch Einfluss auf die Musik und nicht nur auf den Sound?
Billy hatte keinen Einfluss auf die Songs oder die Musik. Dennoch war es er, der die Musik so groß klingen ließ. Wir haben gut mit ihm zusammen gearbeitet, auch wenn wir nicht der einfachste Haufen sind, mit dem man aufnehmen kann.
Euer Label-Boss SCOTT KELLY hat einen Gesangsauftritt auf Nowena | 9.10. Interessant dabei ist, dass er seit Through Silver In Blood nicht mehr so wild und extrem klang, was zeigt, dass er sehr auf eure Musik steht, richtig? Gibt euch das Vertrauen in das, was ihr tut?
Wir fühlen uns durch seine Anwesenheit auf Mass V sehr geehrt. Through Silver In Blood ist mein mit Abstand liebstes NEUROSIS-Album. Wir haben das Vertrauen, dass wir niemals die überzeugendste Band sein werden. Sein Gastauftritt bedeutet für uns viel mehr, dass unser Weg ein guter ist.
Ich habe vor ein paar Jahren einige Gerüchte gehört, dass SCOTT KELLY AMENRA als eine seiner Lieblingsbands genannt hat, somit ist es keine große Überraschung, dass ihr auf NEUROT RECORDINGS gelandet seid. Seid ihr glücklich mit eurer neuen Situation?
Ja, das sind wir. Dieser Vertrag ist bei weitem eines der besten Dinge, die uns bisher widerfahren sind. NEUROT RECORDINGS halfen uns gewaltig und respektierten jede Entscheidung, die wir trafen.

Alles, was AMENRA tun, machen sie aus einem Grund, wie ich annehme. Statt Lyrics gibt es auf der CD zwei verstecke Sätze, May Truth Reign Down On You und Everything Awaits You stehen auf dem Artwork. Das könnte ein Ritual der völligen Reinigung bedeutet, sich zu öffnen, nachdem man gereinigt wurde. Ist das die Hauptaussage hinter Mass V?
Wir wünschen uns, dass jeder die Güte wieder sieht, die inhärente Güte im Herzen eines jeden.
Wenn ich es richtig begriffen habe, werden in den Texten die Stufen einer mentalen Evolution beschrieben. Das wirkt auf mich aber nicht so finster wie die Musik. Gibt es in der Welt von AMENRA Hoffnung?
Wenn es da überhaupt etwas gibt, dass ist es Hoffnung. Licht.
Unterhalb der Tracklist auf der CD steht Wedowa (voor moeder) – da aber kein Bonustrack auf der CD ist, nehme ich an, dass dies eine Widmung ist. Voor moeder heißt für Mutter, richtig?
In der Tat. Alles was wir tun und alles was wir haben, verdanken wir unseren Müttern.
Der visuelle Teil wächst mit jedem eurer Alben. Artwork und Symbolik waren immer wichtig, aber nun transferiert ihr das in bewegte Bilder. Habt ihr nun neue Möglichkeiten dafür?
Wir können dies nun selbst übernehmen. Und ja, der visuelle Aspekt ist genauso wichtig wie die Musik. Es ist ein Angriff auf alle Sinne.
Ihr habt bereits zwei Videos für Tracks von Mass V gedreht – werden die anderen Songs auch noch Clips erhalten?
Vielleicht.
Das Artwork ist grau und düster, auf dem Cover ist der Eingang zu einer Höhle und die Bilder im Booklet sehen wie eine Szene aus dem Film The Road aus. Die gleiche Dunkelheit wie immer?
Immer.
Boden ist ein eher typisches Musikvideo, aber Nowena | 9.10 wurde zu einem düsteren Stop-Motion-Knetfiguren-Albtraum – sehr verstörend und beeindruckend. Wie ich hörte, hat Matthieu Regie geführt. Erschuf er auch die Knetfiguren? Wir kamt ihr auf diese Idee?
Eigentlich hat ein Freund von uns namens Stef Cuypers das ganze Video gedreht. Es handelt sich um die Verkörperung von gemeinsam einsam. Matthieu hat das Video hier und da noch editiert.
Ihr lebt in derselben Gegend wie OATHBREAKER und RISE AND FALL. Stilistisch seid ihr unterschiedlich, aber die Dunkelheit in eurer Musik ist recht ähnlich. Wie kann es sein, dass Bands aus dieser Gegend so fatalistisch klingen – ist Gent eine deprimierende Stadt?
Überhaupt nicht. Viel mehr inspirierend.
2013 werdet ihr viel touren. Stehen schon alle Daten fest, oder wird es mehr Touren geben? Wurde es für euch in den letzten Jahren schwieriger, auf Reisen zu sein?
Das Touren ist generell hart, wir haben Kinder und Vollzeitberufe. Wir versuchen dennoch, alles hinzu bekommen. Bisher stehen Shows bis zum Mai fest, danach werden wir im Sommer Festivals spielen. Im Herbst und Winter werden wir höchstwahrscheinlich Osteuropa, Skandinavien und vielleicht Russland besuchen. Wir werden sehen. Wir geben unser Bestes.

Congratulations for Mass V – which still overwhelms me each time I listen to it. Was the creation of the album as painful as one could guess? Or is AMENRA more a vehicle of purification than just a band?
Mass V was extremely difficult for us to write. Hardest thing we ever did. Some sort of evolution from darkness into light.
While it is still clear that you listen to AMENRA, there are quite some changes in the music. Mass V sounds much more like Doom and Sludge as the past records and there are more calm parts as well. A Mon Ame and Boden have very long calm moments, almost equally to the heavy parts. Therefore the dynamics are insanely effective. You worked a lot on the contrasts, right?
We didn´t work on anything. We just wrote. And ended up with what is now called Mass V.
Only Nowena | 9.10 feels like it is the ultimate weapon. The ending part is killing me, really. Is there a reason this is the last track? (I wrote in my review, the heaviest part of the album is the silence after Nowena. Because I simply need a song after it, it is too tough to leave people after this song alone in the cold world that was created by Mass V.)
It is as intended. We ended the album with a fade out because we believe there is still something coming.
Also, the songs seem to be very stripped down despite their length. Only a few parts, but they are played for a pretty long time. So it´s important to choose only riffs that really work out through many times of repetition? I suppose you threw away a lot of riffs during the songwriting process, right?
We throw away more than we keep. Every riff that makes sense, that translates our being perfectly is kept. The rest disappears.
Mass V was released more than four years after Mass IIII and you focused mainly on Splits with experimental tracks during this time. This seems like you were active and creative throughout all this time, but couldn´t continue to write a proper album?
We hadn´t written anything that we felt worthy of being an AMENRA album. We wrote a lot. And threw it away.
I suppose a band with a level of intensity like AMENRA just can´t go on with songwriting after an album or a tour. There must be a certain vibe, some certain influences to go on with songwriting. True? And if it is true, what has to happen start writing again?

Bad things. We have to have a reason.
What was Lennart´s and Levy´s part in the songwriting? Did they bring fresh ideas to AMENRA?
We all do. Lennart yes, Levy not quite yet. He joined us a lil´ later in the writing process. I truly believe Mass VI will be the ultimate combination of all of us, and our individual vision on music.
Mass V has the best overall impression of all AMENRA-albums. There are four chapters, each sounds different, but the listener can feel there is one common feeling. Like the stages of an evolution maybe. Or is this just some coincidence?
It comes from the same hearts. The same beings. There is always a relation to the things we do. Some sort of truth.
You recorded with producing legend Billy Anderson and the result is the heaviest and best sound you have ever had. Did you work well together? Did he also had his own influence in the music, not only in the sound?
Billy didn´t have an influence on the songs or the music. He did make it sound so grand though. We worked together well, but we´re not the easiest bunch to work with.
Your label-boss has a vocal-part on Nowena | 9.10. It´s interesting, that SCOTT KELLY didn´t sound that furious and extreme since Through Silver In Blood – this means, he must be really into your music, right? Does this give you some confidence in what you´re doing?
We´re really honored with his presence on Mass V. Through Silver In Blood is by far my favorite NEUROSIS album. Confidence we´ll never be the most confident band. It reassures us that we are well upon our way.
I heard some rumors a couple of years ago, that SCOTT KELLY named you as one of his favorite bands, so it´s not a big surprise that you signed to NEUROT RECORDINGS. Are you happy with your new situation?
Yes, we are. It is by far one of the best things that happened to us. They´ve helped us out big time and respected every decision we made.
Everything AMENRA are doing, they do for a purpose, I assume. Instead of lyrics, there are two hidden sentences in the CD. May Truth Reign Down On You and Everything Awaits You are standing on the record. This could describe a ritual of cleansing, to open yourself up after being purified. Is this the main message behind Mass V?
We wish everyone to see the goodness within again, the intrinsic goodness of ones heart and others.

Lyrically you describe a lot of feelings, some stages of mental evolution, if I got it right. But to me it doesn´t feel as dark as the music suggests. Is there hope in the world of AMENRA?
If anything, there is hope. Light.
Below the tracklist stands Wedowa (voor moeder) – first I believed in a hidden track or a bonus track. But I think this is more a dedication – voor moeder means for mother, right?
Indeed. Anything we do, we owe it all to them.
It seems like the visual part grows with this release. Artwork and imagery always have been important, but now you transfer this more into moving pictures. Do you finally have the possibilities of doing this?
We now have the ability of doing this ourselves, too. The visual aspect is equally important, yes. It is an attack on all your senses.
You already shot videos for two tracks of Mass V – will the other tracks get some clips as well?
Maybe.
The artwork is all gray and bleak, there´s a cave on the cover, the pictures in the booklet look like a scene from the movie The Road. So, same darkness as always?
Always.
While Boden received a more typical music video, Nowena | 9.10 turned into a dark stop-motion-clay-nightmare. This is really disturbing and every impressive. Matthieu directed it. Did he also create the clay-dolls? How did he get the idea?
A friend of ours – Stef Cuypers – made the whole video really. It is the materialization of being together alone. Mathieu did some editing here and there.
You live next to OATHBREAKER and RISE AND FALL, stylistically you are a little bit different, but the darkness in your music is quite similar. How come that bands from this area sound so fatalistic? Is Gent a depressing place?
Not at all. Quite inspiring really. 🙂
In 2013 you´re touring quite a lot. Is the schedule complete or will there be more tours? Is touring getting more difficult throughout the years?
Touring is getting really hard, with our families kids and full-time jobs. We try hard to make everything happen, though. Shows are pretty much set up until May. We´ll be playing festivals over summer. In fall and winter 2013 we´ll most likely be playing eastern Europe, Scandinavia and Russia maybe. We´ll see. We´ll do our best.
